 This has been the topic of discussion of last years planning, manufacturing and testing department.  The air flows in from the the top goes down into the heating chamber and then exits up the inner center tube to not only give you the most smooth dynamic when you are inhaling but also saves on too much oil burning too quickly by controlling air flow so much better.

See the pictures shows how the air comes from the side on the top of cartridge, flows through the center tube middle section downward.  Then travels into the center ceramic heating chamber.  From there the smoke travels through the inner tube then into your breath.  Genius.
